Just What IS a Locksmith, Anyway?

Should we be surprised to find the general public has no idea about what type of work a locksmith is really involved in, when our ‘job titles’ don’t make it very clear?

My dictionary defines a ‘smith’ as: one who makes or repairs metal objects, especially by working metal while it is hot and soft. Examples: BLACKsmith, TINsmith, SILVERsmith, GOLDsmith.

The WSIB in Ontario places locksmiths in Class I (Other Repair Services), along with cutlery sharpening, gunsmithing, harness repair, key duplicating, lawn mower sharpening, saw sharpening, and scissor sharpening.

Locksmiths don’t OFTEN fabricate parts with which to repair locks (nor do we fabricate locks). And it certainly isn’t ALL we do.

Does the public know we are experts on: opening locks (including residential and commercial); SELL locks; design and apply Masterkey systems; open and repair safes, panic devices, and other assorted security devices; have a working knowledge of high security locks, and special hardware applications?
