Even burglars would rather not have to work in the cold atmosphere of our Canadian winters. Even so, there are times when the weather is milder and sadly there are some criminals who are willing to brave the cold.
Here are a few suggestions to improve the safety of your home and vehicle during the rigors of a Dufferin County winter.
Timed light switches are an effective year-round security device. Bear in mind that shorter winter days mean that it often gets dark while you’re not home. You should set your timers to operate just after dusk to create a realistic occupied appearance overnight. Don’t forget to adjust the activation and shut-off times as the daylight hours vary significantly, getting shorter up to December 21st and then beginning to increase.
Keep lock de-icer handy not only to help unlock frozen car doors. It can prove useful for locks on the entrance doors of your home, especially screen doors, which can also freeze. You would not appreciate arriving home on a chilly night and not being able to get in because of frozen door locks.
You should never leave your car running unattended. While it is appealing to let your car warm-up before you leave, there are numerous accounts of vehicles that were stolen while warming up. If you want to heat your car, use a separate key to lock it or install a remote starter that lets you start the engine without unlocking the doors.
If you have a security system, check it regularly. Old Man Winter can make the best equipment malfunction. Check throughout the winter, especially during the coldest weather, that all your security equipment functions the way it should.
