When choosing a closer, several factors must be considered. Cost is one prevalent concern. Most manufacturers offer a variety of closers from “basic” to “top of the line”.
Basic closers normally incorporate a fixed, non-adjustable spring in sizes 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. Spring power cannot be increased or decreased from the size chosen without changing the closer.
The “fully adjustable” closer is a non-sized unit with a spring design that allows adjustment of power through a complete range of sizes (normally 2 through 6). Full range adjustable spring power makes this type of closer adaptable to suit conditions on virtually any opening – interior or exterior – as well as regular, parallel arm or top jamb installation.
Fully adjustable closers are often used to meet barrier-free code restrictions for low force opening.
The fully adjustable closer is generally regarded as the most universal but is also more expensive than basic closers.
